The Strategy highlights the versatile uses of biomass in building a green economy, including as a fuel for combined heat and power (CHP). With 20 years’ experience delivering biomass CHP to decarbonise buildings and industrial processes, Fleetsolve is pleased to see the government acknowledge its important role within the UK’s clean energy transition.

“Biomass CHP is a tried and tested decarbonisation solution suitable for organisations of all sizes, across all sectors” said Keith O’Connor, CEO of Fleetsolve. “We are pleased to see the government recognise the crucial part this technology plays as a secure, renewable energy source; and it aligns seamlessly with our core mission.”

Circular economy potential

Biomass-fuelled CHP converts the biomass into both heat and power simultaneously – essentially a single input producing two energy outputs – making it a highly efficient technology. The Strategy acknowledges its role in making use of onsite waste streams, to develop the circular economy. Fleetsolve has been working with agricultural enterprises, food production and pharmaceutical manufacturers to enable them to convert their organic waste into a low or zero-carbon fuel to power their operations.

Biomass CHP can also provide an extra source of revenue in agricultural settings for those organisations who grow sustainable crops to generate electricity that can be sold to the grid.

The strategy highlights additional benefits of biomass CHP:

  • Flexible and secure: Biomass CHP suitable for dispersed locations and off grid applications and can operate from small to large capacities. It can therefore provide flexibility and security of supply for sites, with an 8-15-year life cycle of main engine components allowing for long term investment decisions to be made.
  • Grid flexibility: Biomass CHP can offer flexible dispatchable capacity to the electricity grid to help offset renewable generation intermittency and can provide surplus heat to district heating projects and heat networks.
  • Tackling hard to abate sectors: The strategy also emphasises the significance of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) alongside CHP. This combination can drive substantial decarbonisation, especially in challenging sectors such as cement production.

Future-proof technology

Fleetsolve’s CHP units operate flexibly and can be powered by multiple fuel types – both liquid and gaseous – ranging from natural gas, LPG, Propane, bio-LPG, rDME, biogas, syn-gas, biofuel and hydrogen. This makes CHP an ideal choice for organisations wishing to set an energy transition roadmap to onsite decarbonisation.

With two decades’ experience in renewable energy solutions to public and private sector organisations, Fleetsolve is committed to promoting the benefits of biomass CHP as a secure, carbon neutral energy source.

“Over 20 years, we’ve seen first-hand the benefits of this tried and tested technology, and we’re pleased the Biomass Strategy signals long-term support for biomass CHP in displacing fossil fuels,” emphasised Keith O’Connor. “Fleetsolve is dedicated to partnering with stakeholders, sharing expertise, and collectively driving the transition to a greener, more sustainable future.”
